When the Center for Energy and Environment launched the Minnesota Energy Challenge in October 2007, we had a simple goal - to help Minnesotans learn about energy efficiency and reduce energy waste. We created a challenge for communities to compete around reducing energy waste that was both fun and easy and enabled participants to see the difference their actions made. We did this by developing an online tracking tool that schools, churches, businesses, and nonprofits could use to set goals and monitor progress.
The Minnesota Energy Challenge has changed a lot over the past five years but our goal hasn't. As of October 2011, our 5th birthday, more than 27,000 Minnesotans have joined the Energy Challenge and pledged to save more than $13 million in energy costs. This is a reduction in more than 228 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions! We're excited to keep growing and providing engaging and entertaining tools for energy efficiency education within Minnesota communities.
